When Childcare Falls Through For A Working Mom

The Importance of a Family Friendly Corporate Culture A few weeks ago my childcare fell through. Then my back-up care didn’t work out. I was on to back-up number two when I realized it would be easier to take them with me. We dressed, had breakfast and made the way to my office. Once there, the girls set up their mini work space using the DIY activity kit shown above. It’s a laptop sleeve filled with paper, notebooks, markers, etc. They love it and are able to do arts and crafts while I work. When I had a meeting, they…

Girls Night Out at BoneFish Grill

Review of Bonefish Grill New Menu Last week I had the pleasure of a Girls’ Night Out to try the new menu at Bonefish Grill. Let me start by saying I love their bang bang shrimp! It has been a favorite for many years, so I was happy to see it stayed on the menu. As part of the new dishes, there’s a Bang Bang Shrimp flatbread on the starter menu (top photo). It was VERY. GOOD! However, let me warn you, it is spicy so make sure you have a drink ready. I wasn’t expecting the spicy so I…

My Couple’s Day Out: Asheville, NC

This weekend Hubby and I decided to spend a day in Asheville. It’s only two hours from Charlotte (perfect for a day trip!) and it’s a great city for arts, good food and/or nature. We had no itinerary, so we parked in the downtown area to see what we could find. We enjoyed walking the area, stopping in galleries that looked interesting and browsing shops filled with fabulous handmade goods. If you are looking for one-of-a-kind artwork, sculpture or jewelry, you will LOVE Asheville. The choices are plentiful and the people are nice. There are also random places to stop…

Our Visit To Sea Life Aquarium in Concord Mills

As an afternoon outing, I took the girls to Sea Life Aquarium at Concord Mills Mall outside of Charlotte, NC. Sea Life is much more than “oohing and aahing” at various sea animals. It’s a fun lesson in environmental responsibility. The aquarium is a nice size and the experience is very interactive without being overwhelming. For instance, the sharks are in a tank with stingrays and other sea animals, but they are not intimidating. My girls loved that they could get really close to them and compare what they saw on National Geographic with real life. The highlights for my…

Chocolate Ruled My Birthday Gifts This Year

One of the great things about publicly declaring my love of chocolate is the great gifts I get for my birthday. This year my girls and Hubby treated me to this candy apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, along with chocolate-covered strawberries. This is one of their fabulous caramel apples covered with white chocolate and more. And yes, I’m a chocoholic that loves white chocolate, too, :-). If you have never treated yourself to one of their caramel apples you should. It’s the perfect mix of sweet and tart. At a lunch with friends they surprised me with this array…

5 Things Every Mom Should Keep In Her Car

Here are five things that every mom should keep in her “Mom Emergency Car Kit.” All-Weather, Indoor/Outdoor Blanket. Whether we need the blanket for cover because the kids are chilly or for an impromptu picnic in the park, this blanket has been a lifesaver. It’s also great for cleaning up spills that are too big for paper towels. Bottled Water. Of course, it’s good if you or the kids get thirsty. But, it is useful for much more than that. I use it to wet napkins and voila, I have a wet wipe. It’s also good for washing scrapes/bruises, and…

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes Review

After a screening of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes I get why the reviews are great. From the acting to the sets to the special effects and the storyline, it’s all stellar! The apes MAKE this movie, no question. The storyline and special effects are done so well you believe the apes as they work through friendships, betrayal, decision-making and more. You root for the humans and apes to get along, even though you know it can’t end that way. Whether it’s an emotional tug or an action war scene, I couldn’t help but feel attached to Caesar…

Coping Mechanisms For Working Mothers

Earlier this month PepsiCo CEO Indra K. Nooyi talked about working moms having it all (or not). In the article she detailed a couple of her coping mechanisms, like training family and workers to help out. I’m a huge advocate of building a support network, and here are a few other things that work for me. Discuss schedules, needs, special projects and more as a family. My girls are understanding and even offer help when they feel like part of the process. So, we talk about their special projects and events just like I talk about my schedule, especially if…
